Saint Benedict Catholic School has offered enrichment for the homeschool families of the Richmond area. Last year children gathered for a learning session on St. Hildegard von Bingen who was declared a doctor of the church on October 7, 2012. Father Kauffmann spoke about St. Hildegard and her friendship with Saint Bernard and then we visited their stained glass windows in the church. After that, our children went to the art room in the parish school and our art teachers, Mrs. Polczynski and Mrs. Woodward through whom we partner with the Virginia Museum of the Fine Arts provided us with an exciting art lesson. The children explored the art of simple printmaking and silhouette painting investigating a mandala representing one of Hildegard’s visions of The Tree of Life. Each child created an original Tree of Life applying the use of symbols to express ideas and personal meaning. There is a group of home schooling families that meets regularly with Father Kauffmann. If you would like more information on how to be involved, please contact the parish office at 254-8810.
