Volunteering
Volunteers are an essential part of the Saint Benedict Community. Volunteer opportunities are coordinated by the PTO and listed on the PTO page.
Safe Environment Requirements
All volunteers who will be working with or near children in the school must meet three requirements.
- Have current background screening (every 5 years).
- Have attended a VIRTUS training session, and conistently complete the montly training bulletin, as evidenced by answering a short multiple-choice question at the end of the reading (Bulletin is sent montly via e-mail).
- Have a Diocesan Safe Environment Policy Acknowledgement Form on file.
For adults who have volunteered for or been employed by a school or parish in the diocese, the Diocese of Richmond maintains a central database of background screenings and VIRTUS training; however, a Diocesan Safe Environment Policy acknowledgement must be submitted at each location for anyone who completed VIRTUS before May 1, 2017.
For new volunteers, as part of the on-line process for signing-up for a VIRTUS training, you will complete a background screening and acknowledge receipt of the Diocesan Safe Environment policy. Visit Child Protection/ VIRTUS® to sign up for a training sessions. All training sessions are live.
Driving
Personal Vehicle - If you plan to drive your own vehicle on a field trip, in addition you will need to:
- Complete a Volunteer Driver form - annual requirement
- Watch the "Be Smart - Drive Safe" video - one-time requirement
School Activity Bus - If you plan to drive one of the school's activity buses, in addition you will need to:
- Complete a DMV Driving Record Check (by visiting https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/onlineServices/) which shows no moving violations in past year, no DUI in past 5 years, and no more than 3 points for a moving violation in the past 3 years. - biannual requirement*
- Watch the "Be Smart - Drive Safe" video - one-time requirement
* On the DMV Record Check. Please provide a print out to the front office and your receipt, so we can reimburse you. A report is required every two years.

Once you have completed the training you will be able to download and print the completion certificate.
The Video is about 18 minutes. There is also a driver questionnaire. To pass you will need to not have been convicted of an infraction involving drugs or alcohol in the last 3 years, not have been convicted of two or more infractions involving drugs or alcohol in the last 7 years, and have no more than three moving violations or accidents in the last 3 years.
