Voting Information

In the upcoming election, you are asked not just to vote, but to cast an educated vote.  To help with this, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the individual bishops of the United States have issued a number of documents.  Some of the key points in these documents include:

"The Church's role is to teach the truth that is revealed to us by Christ in Sacred Scripture and Tradition.  This teaching is what we endorse, rather than candidates or political parties."

- Statement from Bishops DiLorenzo and Loverde

"Disregarding the right to life itself - the foundation upon which all other human rights are based and without which no other right could possibly exist - is more serious than any other human rights violation."

- Statement from Bishops DiLorenzo and Loverde

"We must appreciate the difference in moral gravity between policies which are intrinsically unjust (e.g., abortion, euthanasia, and the deliberate destruction of human embryos) and policies involving prudential judgments about which people of good will may disagree concerning various means of promoting economic justice, public safety, and fair opportunities for every person."

- Statement from Bishops DiLorenzo and Loverde

"The direct and intentional destruction of innocent human life from the moment of conception until natural death is always wrong and is not just one issue among many.  It must always be opposed."

- Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship

"There are no 'truly grave moral' or 'proportionate' reasons, singularly or combined, that could outweigh the millions of innocent human lives that are directly killed by legal abortion each year."

- Statement from Bishops Farrell and Vann

The full text of each statment by the bishops is attached at the bottom of this page as well as an interesting article on forming your conscience.  Please read them carefully and make an informed decision before you vote.

For those who would like to read a detailed description of Catholic teaching in this area, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops published Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship:  A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States.
